Action Regulation/General Maintenance
Piano actions are the mechanisms that transfer a player’s movements from the piano keys into the music we hear resonating from the strings. They consist of a series of levers, buttons, hammers, and straps that can come out of alignment over time. Wood, felt, and other materials in the piano can also become compressed or warped due to fluctuations of humidity. Action regulation is therefore often necessary to bring any older piano closer to its optimal performance level.
Voicing
You may have noticed that some older pianos have a dull or “tinny” sound. Often this is because the hammer felts have become compressed over time, and may even have deep grooves in them, preventing the hammers from striking the strings evenly. Voicing adjustments can also be made to refine or modify the tone of your instrument to better suit player preferences. Strings can also fall out of alignment with other piano parts, affecting quality of tone.
